Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 2026

Overview

WarrantyBrain is a Chrome extension that helps you track product warranties. We take your privacy seriously. This policy explains exactly what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we protect it.

Short version: We collect the minimum data needed to run the service. We never sell your data. We never send personal information to AI systems.

What Data We Collect

Free Tier (No Account Required)

All warranty data is stored locally on your device using chrome.storage.local. We do not collect, store, or transmit any of this data to our servers. This includes:

  • Product names and model numbers
  • Purchase dates and retailers
  • Warranty expiration dates
  • Registration confirmation numbers you enter

Pro Tier (Cloud Sync)

If you upgrade to Pro, your warranty records are synced to our secure Supabase database so you can access them across devices. We store:

  • Your email address (used as account identifier)
  • Your warranty records (same data as above)
  • Subscription status and billing dates (managed by Stripe)

We do not store credit card numbers — all payment processing is handled entirely by Stripe.

Warranty Lookup and AI

When WarrantyBrain looks up warranty information for a product, it may send the following to our backend server:

  • Product name (e.g., "Sony WH-1000XM5")
  • Model number (e.g., "WH-1000XM5")
  • Product category (e.g., "headphones")
  • Manufacturer name (e.g., "Sony")

We never send order IDs, your name, email address, shipping address, or payment information to our servers or to any AI service. Before any data leaves your browser, it passes through a scrubber that removes all personally identifiable information.

For products not in our curated database, we may send the scrubbed product name and model to Anthropic's Claude AI to retrieve warranty terms. Anthropic's data handling is governed by their privacy policy.

Permissions We Request

The extension requests these Chrome permissions:

  • storage — to save your warranty records locally and in the cloud (Pro)
  • alarms — to check for expiring warranties daily (runs in the background, not continuously)
  • notifications — to alert you when a warranty is detected or expiring
  • activeTab — to read the page you are currently viewing to detect purchases
  • Host permissions for amazon.com and bestbuy.com — to detect order confirmation pages on these retailers only

We do not request broad "read all websites" permissions. The extension only activates on Amazon and Best Buy order confirmation pages.

Data Retention

  • Free tier: Data lives on your device. Uninstalling the extension removes all data.
  • Pro tier: Data is stored in our database while your subscription is active. After cancellation, your data is retained for 30 days and then archived (not deleted) for 12 months in case you resubscribe. You can request deletion at any time by emailing privacy@[YOUR_DOMAIN].

Third-Party Services

  • Supabase — database and authentication (Pro only). Data is stored in the US.
  • Stripe — payment processing. We share your email with Stripe for billing only.
  • Anthropic — AI-powered warranty lookup (scrubbed product data only, no PII).

We do not use advertising networks, tracking pixels, or analytics.

Your Rights

You can:

  • Clear all local extension data from the extension's settings page
  • Request a copy of your cloud data by emailing privacy@[YOUR_DOMAIN]
  • Request deletion of your account and data at any time
